I really can’t put it more emphatically or elegantly than this.
That said, I think I’m going to try.
UGH YES THANK YOU. Weirdly I feel there’s an even and as-yet (mostly) unspoken divide between Mass Effect fans over the proposed film—those who love FemShep and all she stands for, and those who prefer Sheploo (or MShep or DudeShep, whichever you call him). Because we all know what Movie!Shep is probably going to look like—a white, heterosexual, classically American military male.
While there is nothing WRONG with Movie!Shep looking like that, I feel like it’s damaging to the great things BioWare has done with Mass Effect (and many of their other games), and rather demeaning to how hard fans of FemShep fought just to get the woman her own TRAILER for ME3. That’s not even bringing race or sexuality into the picture. It’s like… yeah, cool. Let’s make a film that
we’ll pour a ton of resources into that will solidify the face of this video game as the stereotypical white male gamer instead of trying to create more content that emphasizes the diversity of players who love our games.Plus, a GOOD movie based on a video game? When has that ever happened? EVER? Why must one of the best video games in the HISTORY OF GAMING be given this treatment? It can only end in tears.
Just… ugh. Angry!Shep out.
And there are other questions yet unanswered! Will it be entirely CGI or live action? If it’s live action, who will play Shepard? Surely not Vanderloo, as dude is a model and not an actor. If it’s CGI, will they keep the same voice actors? Will I want to see it if they don’t? Why does every science fiction action hero have to be a late 20s early 30s tall straight white dude with with brown hair and some kind of I’m The One complex or a fridged girlfriend?
And most importantly, will movie!Shep be Paragon or Renegade?
